Cut and Welded Double Ball Raceway Swivel casters
Swivel casters that have a “cut and welded” construction are generally referring to cold forged casters, using thicker gauge steel than stamped casters (typically ¼”+ thick cold roller steel). What is meant by a “Cut & Welded” design is all of the parts of the caster yoke (legs, raceways, top plate) are stamped out as separate pieces, then welded together.
There are three main pieces to the raceways that have 4 embossed tracks on them, two sets of bearings roll in the embossed tracks. There is an upper and lower cap to the raceways. The upper cap is under the top plate and has a set of bearings between it and the upper embossment of the top of the raceway section that the legs are welded to (called a leg base). The second set of bearings roll between the top of the lower cap and the bottom of the leg base. The upper raceway handles the load of the weight put on the caster. The lower raceway handles the swiveling action and thrust of the caster. Most medium to heavy duty raceways are hardened to increase the capacity, and life of the caster.
Series of cut and welded swivel casters with unhardened raceways are also available for economical applications like trash containers. There are different styles, designs and size ranges of these casters for different unique applications, like short overall height casters for business & vending machines, or pneumatic casters that have air filled tires that offer an exceptionally smooth cushioned ride and floor protection. The most common design of the cut and welded casters used in countless applications use a 1-1/2” & 2” wide wheel in 4”, 5”, 6” & 8” diameters (see 27/28 series). Matching rigid casters are available for these types swivel casters. Some of the options for this class of swivel casters are: 4 position locks, cam brakes, top lock brakes, thread guards, raceway seals. Stainless steel casters & total lock casters also utilize the cut and welded caster design.
